Stephen is an innovator in the field of disability and employment. Having broken his neck and become a C3/4 Tetraplegic whilst a medical student he has achieved the above qualifications and founded and run a successful business, Disability Matters Limited. This company has, since 1989, worked with employers seeking to employ disabled people and disabled people looking to obtain employment.
Stephen has been the Project Director of an award winning New Deal for Disabled People employment project. He has also led five further projects operating in the South East and Midlands regions. In addition he is currently working with psychologists from the Employment Service and Loughborough University to develop a computer-based tool to assess the employability of disabled people, which will be called "Matching Ability with Jobs".
He has acted as a consultant or adviser to over 400 companies, government departments, local authorities and health authorities.
He has an international reputation for his work and conducted substantial research projects in the UK and abroad within the EU and for the ILO focusing on disability and rehabilitation.
He has worked as an adviser to various Ministers, the Cabinet Secretary, Permanent Secretaries in government departments, the CBI and the Prince of Wales.
Stephen is a Member of the Court and Council of the University of Southampton, an Associate of the Employers' Forum on Disability and a Member of the Academy of Experts. He is a non-executive director of four companies operating in the disability market. These are Route2Mobility Limited, Enham Finance Limited, Enham Direct Limited and the Enabling Partnership Trading Limited.
Stephen has received several awards and honours for his work relating to disability including the Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, Smith & Nephew Foundation, Foulkes Foundation Fellowship and Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
His expertise with regards to expert witness work is of five years standing. He has written a very large number of employability reports and attended the High Court on more than ten occasions to be cross-examined.
